Sant Esteve, 26 December

The day after Christmas is a public holiday here, and it exists largely to eat the meat stew from the day before, recycled into pasta and baked under béchamel.

The cannelloni

Cannelloni is to Sant Esteve what turkey is to the 25th: the traditional dish, historically made by grinding the meat left over from Christmas lunch.

A quiet city

Museums and most shops shut, and families stay at the table. It is one of the calmest days of the year to walk through the centre.

Eating it out

Traditional Catalan restaurants put cannelloni on the menu through the whole holiday period, so you do not need a family invitation to try it properly.
